Infographic: Carving Up Canadian Thanksgiving by the Numbers

This coming Monday, October 10th, Canadians will sit down to celebrate Thanksgiving with turkey, mashed potatoes and all the fixings…don’t forget the pumpkin pie!

You can enjoy a traditional holiday meal without stuffing yourself as full as the turkey. The key is to enjoy a little bit of everything by “carving” up your Thanksgiving meal into healthy servings, especially the richer dishes. For instance, a slice of white meat turkey roughly the width, length, and thickness of a deck of cards weighs in at approximately 140 calories. Keep the mashed potatoes and stuffing to a half-cup serving (tennis ball sized) and around 150-calories each. You can still savour your gravy and cranberry sauce, just stick to 1/4-cup servings (golf ball sized) at approximately 50- and 100-calories each. Aim to make fresh sides, like fresh fruit and veggies, beans, and whole grains the focus of your meal. And don’t forget dessert, yes you can have pie too, a 1/8 slice (light bulb sized) will run you about 350-calories.
