Preventing Holiday Jet Lag


The holiday season is rife with travel plans to visit beloved family, friends, or to go on a family adventure!  However, jet lag can really put a damper on your Christmas cheer—especially when you’re bringing it by airplane travel over thousands of miles.

Jet lag often occurs when we cross multiple time zones rapidly. This type of travel causes the circadian rhythm (or the body’s internal clock) to be thrown off, and feelings of daytime fatigue, nausea, difficulty staying alert and gastrointestinal problems can occur over the course of a few days following travel.

To combat your own jet lag, keep the following natural remedies in your carry on…

1. Caffeine

We all know that caffeine is a great alertness or energy booster when you need it. So if you’re tired in the middle of the day following a trip, you can have a cup of coffee to give yourself a little jump start. However, remember to curb your caffeine intake at least six hours before going to sleep or it may cause you a restless night and aggravate your jet lag symptoms.

2. Lavender

Essential oils, candles, bubble bath or even drinking lavender tea may help you catch up on a few nights of restful sleep after you return from a trip.

3. Sunlight

Many folks will visit a tanning salon for a few sessions following a trip across the pond in order to reset their internal clocks.

4. Melatonin

Melatonin is a sleep aid and it can be taken in supplement form right before bed to help soothe the body and mind into a restful night’s sleep.

5. Good old fashioned sleep

Another mistake many people make is not permitting themselves enough rest and recovery time following a trip. So do your part to ensure you are well rested before your trip. Also, give yourself permission to relax and sleep on the plane so you are well rested on the trip there and back.
