Depression

Clinical depression is defined as a pervasive state of “low mood.” Symptoms include feelings of despair, sadness or hopelessness, which are typically accompanied by appetite disturbances, lack of energy, insomnia or hypersomnia. In order for a depression diagnosis to be accurate, such symptoms must be present for a continuous period of several months, and the symptoms must affect a patient’s social, personal and/or professional life. A wide range of treatment options are available, including psychotherapy, group therapy and stimulant or antidepressant drugs. Many studies have linked exercise with reduced symptom severity, and physical activity is recommended as a supplementary management strategy.
